Why do concrete driveways crack in Nova Scotia?

Most driveway failures start underneath. Water gets into soft soil, freezes, expands and lifts the slab. When it thaws, the ground drops back unevenly and the concrete cracks across the weak spot. Salt makes the surface flake if the mix has no entrained air.

That is why most of the work on a Langille driveway happens before the truck shows up. We take the soil down to firm ground, replace it with crushed gravel and compact it. The slab then sits on something that drains and does not move much when the frost comes.

Should I replace my driveway or just repair it?

If the cracks are hairline and the slab is level, sealing the cracks can buy you years. If sections have sunk, tipped toward the house, or broken into pieces that move when you drive on them, the base has failed and patching the top will not hold.

We will tell you which one you have when we come out. If a repair makes more sense than a replacement, we will say so.

Broom finish or exposed aggregate?

A broom finish is the standard for driveways here. The brushed texture gives grip on wet and icy mornings and it is the most affordable finish.

Exposed aggregate washes off the top layer of cement to show the stone underneath. It hides tire marks and dirt, has good grip, and suits houses with stone or brick. It costs more than broom. We can show you both at the site visit.

Concrete or asphalt for a driveway?

Concrete costs more up front and lasts longer with less upkeep. Asphalt is cheaper to put down but needs sealing every few years and softens in summer heat. If you are not sure, we will price both options honestly and explain what each one needs over its life.

How long does a concrete driveway last?

A properly built concrete driveway in Nova Scotia can give you decades of service. The ones that fail early almost always share the same causes: a thin or soft base, no steel, a mix without entrained air, or joints cut too late or too far apart.

Those are the four things our spec is built around. The finish is what you see on day one. The base and the mix decide what you see in year twenty.

What affects the price of a concrete driveway?

Size is the biggest factor, but it is not the only one. Removing an old asphalt or concrete driveway adds break-out and disposal. Soft ground means a deeper dig and more gravel. Tight access, a long haul from the street, or a slope can add labour. Exposed aggregate costs more than a broom finish, and a garage apron or walkway poured at the same time adds square footage but saves a second mobilization.

Your written quote lists each of these as its own line, so you can see where the money goes and decide what to keep.

What happens on the day of the pour?

The forms and steel are already set and checked. The ready-mix truck backs in, and the crew places, screeds and floats the concrete in sections while it is workable. Once the surface firms up, we trowel the borders and pull a broom across the slab for grip.

Joints are cut as soon as the concrete can take the saw without ravelling, and curing compound goes on the same day. You will want your vehicles parked on the street that morning, and pets and kids kept clear of the wet slab.

How do I look after a new concrete driveway?

Keep cars off it for about a week and heavy trucks off it until we give you the date. Through its first winter, use sand for traction instead of de-icing salt. Clear snow with a plastic-edged shovel or a blower rather than a steel blade.

After that, a rinse in spring to wash off winter salt goes a long way. Ask us at the walkthrough whether a sealer makes sense for your finish.

How long before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?

Foot traffic after a day or two, cars after about a week. Concrete keeps gaining strength for about a month, so Langille will give you a separate date for heavy trucks or a loaded trailer.

How long does a driveway replacement take?

Removal, base, forms and pour usually take a few days on site, depending on size and weather. Langille keeps you posted each morning so you know when to move your vehicles.

Do you pour driveways in cold weather?

Yes, within limits. Below about 5°C Langille uses blankets and accelerators or reschedules. We will tell you which at quote time.
